Aug 2, 2022: The La Parva Junior Freeride 2* was a smashing success!
Freeride Sudamerica alongside IFSA (International Freeskiers Association) kicked off the global 2023 Freeride season with the first event taking place in the Southern Hemisphere on the last day of July.
The Junior Series 2* Regional competition for those under 18 years of age took place in the La Pared venue of the La Parva Ski Resort. This was the first opportunity for junior riders to earn ranking points for the upcoming Freeride season. For the first time, South American juniors and local riders were also able to collect ranking points as they vie for qualification to the 2023 Junior North American Championship for Region 2 juniors. The competition at La Parva brought together athletes from different clubs in Chile, the United States, Argentina and Brazil. To date, this is Freeride Sudamerica’s most multicultural event so far!
Adam Jones, a US coach out of Colorado gushed, “We are very happy here in Chile, we have not experienced the welcome we received anywhere else in the world and our athletes are living a sporting and cultural experience that they will always remember. Next year we will come back with an even bigger team!”
For the La Parva 2* Regional, there were 37 competitors who each completed 2 runs down the La Pared venue. The judges Sebastían “Tuto” Oyarzun, Saga Goñi, and Eduardo “Oso” Herreros worked alongside Head Judge Gonzalo Lopatin who is a member of the IFSA Board of Directors and manager of Freeride South America. Gonzalo helped the team work efficiently to ensure the athletes had the opportunity to execute two runs during the 1-day competition.
"The competitors showed a high level of athleticism; we are very happy to start this series and enhance the future of South American Freeride! We want to thank La Parva for all their help and dedication to carry out an event of this magnitude,” said Fernando Ochagavía, Manager for the Chilean Series of Freeride Sudamerica.

A standout highlight of the La Parva 2* Regional was the performance of competition’s youngest athlete, Clemente Cuadra. At just 9 years old, Clemente’s debut run highlighted a bright future for young Chilean skiers. An additional aspect of the La Parva event was the large number of snowboard participants! There were more registered snowboarders at the La Parva Regional than skiers!
The next stop on the Freeride Sudamerica tour will be held at El Colorado on Saturday, August 6, while the Freeride World Qualifier (FWQ) competition for adults will follow on Sunday the 7th. Should weather present any issues, the competition will utilize a weather day on Monday the 8th. We encourage Freeriders to complete registration for the El Colorado 2* Regional soon! Registration cost will increase in the days leading up to the competiton.
The Freeride Sudamerica Tour will then continue in Argentina at Cerro Bayo on September 10 for Juniors and Sept 11 for the FWQ event. Riders will then head to Cerro Catedral for a Junior 2* Regional on September 17 an an FWQ 2* on September 18. Upon the conclusion of the series, the South American rankings will be finalized and tour titles awarded. For our FWQ events, the top South American athlete in each division will automatically qualify into the prestigious FWQ Finals Series in the US and Canada. For FWQ riders, the FWQ Finals Series is the path to qualification to the top tier of competition on the Freeride World Tour (FWT).

EL COMUNICADO DE PRENSA EN ESPAÑOL
El Freeride Junior 2* de La Parva fue todo un éxito
02/08/2022: Freeride Sudamérica, junto a la IFSA (International Freeskiers Association), dieron puntapié inicial a la temporada de Freeride en el hemisferio sur y a su vez realizaron el primer evento del calendario mundial 2023.
Se trata de una competencia junior, para menores de 18 años, que se realizó en el sector La Pared de La Parva y que suma puntos para el ranking americano. Ahora todos nuestros riders locales tendrán representación a nivel internacional y en un futuro podrán ser clasificados a las finales americanas que se realizan en Estados Unidos y Canadá, clasificatorias al Junior Freeride Tour.
La competencia reunió a atletas de diferentes clubes de Chile, Estados Unidos, Argentina y Brasil, convirtiéndose en el evento Junior más plurinacional de freeride en Sudamérica.
“Estamos muy felices aquí en Chile, el recibimiento que tuvimos no lo hemos experimentado en ninguna otra parte del mundo y nuestros niños están viviendo una experiencia deportiva y cultural que recordarán siempre. El año que viene volveremos con un equipo aún más grande”, manifestó Adam Jones, entrenador del equipo estado unidense proveniente de Colorado.
Fueron un total de 37 riders que completaron 2 bajadas cada uno sumando el puntaje de ambas para determinar las posiciones finales y los podios.
Los jueces Sebastían “Tuto” Oyarzun, Saga Goñi y Eduardo “Oso” Herreros trabajaron a la par de Gonzalo Lopatin, quién es Head Judge, miembro del directorio de la IFSA y manager de Freeride Sudamérica, para trabajar lo más eficientemente posible y que los atletas tengan la posibilidad de hacer dos bajadas el mismo día.
“Los niños demostraron un gran nivel, estamos muy contentos de comenzar un proyecto que llevará el futuro del Freeride Sudamericano a lo más alto y le queremos dar las gracias a La Parva por toda su predisposición para llevar a cabo un evento de esta magnitud”, dijo Fernando Ochagavía, manager por Chile de Freeride Sudamérica

La gran novedad del día fue la performance del niño más pequeño de la competencia, Clemente Cuadra, que con tan solo 9 años demostró que el Freeride chileno tiene un gran futuro. Mientras que otro aspecto a destacar fue que el snowboard tuvo más competidores que el ski, marcando también la fortaleza de una disciplina en crecimiento.
La siguiente fecha de este campeonato sudamericano se llevará a cabo en El Colorado el día sábado 6 de agosto, mientras que la competencia Freeride World Qualifier (FWQ) para adultos será el domingo 7. Si hay mal clima se correrá el lunes 8. Las inscripciones estarán abiertas hasta el miércoles 3 y del miércoles al sábado 6 tendrá costo doble.
El Tour Sudamericano continuará en Argentina en Cerro Beyo con un Junior 2* el 10 de septiembre y un FWQ 2* el 11 de septiembre. En el mismo mes, habrá un evento en Cerro Catedral para niños el 17 de septiembre y un evento para atletas de FWQ el 18. Se definirá el ranking sudamericano que le dará la posibilidad al mejor atleta por categoría de clasificar a las finales FWQ que se realizan en Estados Unidos y Canadá y que dan cupos para el campeonato mundial de Freeride (FWT).
