Salt Lake City, UT -  The International Freeskiers and Snowboard Association proudly announces the 2013 Junior Big Mountain Freeskiing and Snowboarding system along with event dates. Following right off of last years scramble to create a system that can accommodate the amount of growth and demand junior freeskiing and snowboarding has seen, the IFSA has listened to coaches, programs, and event producers. “This system was created 100% from everyone’s input and votes, with the intent we have to grow the sport from the bottom up”, said Rob Greener IFSA Vice President.

The IFSA Junior system is similar to last years regional and national structure. The grassroots approach relies on programs, resorts, and independent production companies to shoulder the burden of producing these junior freeride events. “It is unrealistic to expect one company to support an entire event series with 1,300 unique athletes participating”, said Greener. The move to make the IFSA North America Juniors evolved out of last years Junior Freeskiing Tour selling out in seconds. Coaches, parents, and athletes were frustrated with the overwhelming demand to enter junior competitions. The IFSA responded and within one week put together a system similar in structure to already existing slopestyle, halfpipe, racing, and freestyle systems.

The two tier system comprised of regional events, national events, and one rotating North American Championship relies on the IFSA for sanctioning, insurance, protocol, and direction. The new mandate for 2013 is that technical delegates will be in place at every national event along with a certified head judge. The rest of the judging panel will have to go through a judges training session before being granted to judge any IFSA events, and head judges have been hand selected by the IFSA. “The goal of the system on the national level is to provide consistency from event to event,“ said Greener.

New for 2013, the IFSA has included snowboarding on the regional level, with the intent to include snowboarding on the national level in 2014. On the national level, the IFSA is expecting around 10-12 national events, and limiting two national events per region (BC/Alberta are exempt and permitted to have four national events). The IFSA has created a North American Championship event, with the intent of this event is to qualify athletes both regional and nationally. The event will also include snowboarding and create a true overall champion. Each region may determine the number of regional events they are willing to host and regions who are lacking events need may reach out to the IFSA for further assistance in event creation.
