Penitentes El Tolosa 2016 3* FWQ

After debuting in 2015 with the hosting of a 2* Freeride World Qualifying (FWQ) competition, Los Penitentes is back on the calendar for 2016 with a 3* FWQ event. Los Penitentes Tolosa 2016 is scheduled for August 19-21 (21 being a weather day), and is expected to attract a global field of competitors, including athletes from Argentina, Chile, the United States, Canada, Brazil and Europe.

Remote, wild and with an impressive event venue, Los Penitentes is quickly becoming renowned among savvy skiers and riders due to the mellow vibe of the ski are and the world-class hike-to terrain adjacent and above the lifts. It’s an unknown gem that won’t remain a secret for long as more riders from around the globe take the annual pilgrimage to this high mountain powder oasis each season.

This year’s competition will be held on the 4th Avenida venue, boasting a vertical drop of 402 meters (1300 feet), the slope is 810 meters long with a maximum steepness of 42 degrees. With a variety of lines to choose from, it’s an ideal face for participants to explore their creativity in harmony with the mountain. Easy spectator access compliments the festive vibe that will be experience here as friends and fellow competitors cheer each other on.

Due to the compressed timing of the confirmation of the event and the scheduled time for the competition, inscriptions are open on first-come, first-served basis. With a maximum athlete field of 80, it’s expected that there will be the opportunity for all athletes who wish to compete to do so. However, should this event sell out, there will be a limited number of spaces for pre-qualified 4 and 3* FWQ athlete who will be allocated entry based upon their current point standings. Entry fees are $100/athlete and include lift tickets.

Los Penitentes is located on Argentine highway 7, at km 161 in the direction of Chile from Mendoza, If you are coming from Santiago, travel via Chile highway 60 in the direction of Portillo and then through the border crossing into Argentina.
