Today the IFSA and freeskiing community mourns the loss of our dear friend, Jim Jack, who passed away in an avalanche near Stevens Pass, Washington. We at the IFSA are sending our love, thoughts, and prayers to the victims involved and their friends and family during this tragic time.
“Overall the event was an awesome celebration of freeskiing. The male 15-18 year old category was mind blowing. Those runs would have placed well even in our senior competition. This is a strong indicator that younger athletes are really going to take skiing to the next level in future years.” said Jeff Holden, the Canadian Open’s Head Judge.
Freeskiing, with its travels and opportunities that come with the sport are something that I always promised myself never to take for granted. In the past ten years, I have been able to travel the world with my freeskiing friends searching for fresh snow, attending freeskiing events, and everything else in between. In a world where social networking and the internet has brought us all together as one, requesting instant play-by-play updates of our personal interests on a daily basis is always a top priority. When you visit small mountain ski resort towns, the technological demand seems to shift, and that is something I always admired about its occupants.

Athlete Name: Nash Grimm
Nickname: FT (First Tracks)
Freeride Program & Head Coach: Crystal Mountain - Northwest Freeride Team, Wayne Grevey
J.D. Thompson - Northwest Freeride Coach "If I had to sum Nash up with one sentence: Hard work and dedication pays off. I have watched this kid compete, taking lines that only the adults would even think about. Not only skiing sick lines but stomping the landings and controling his speed Lining up the next hit and pulling off a huge 360. Nash is always in a great mood and as a team captain it shows when all the kids get on the lift with a smile and leave the mountain with a smile. It’s always nice to see the ones you coach, growing up and then you end up following them down the hill."

Athlete Name: Matthew Evans
Freeride Program & Head Coach: Crested Butte Mountain Sports Team - Woody Lindenmeyr
Woody Lindenmeyr - "Matt is one of the most dedicated skiers I have seen. He is out there enjoying the sport every chance he gets, which is 6-7 days a week. It is difficult to get him to take a day off. He is a complete skier too. He can ski the park and pipe, tear up bumps, race a course. There are no bad ski days for Matt, but of course the steeps, cliffs, and powder are where he is most comfortable and happiest. It has been a privilege to coach him the past 5 years."

Athlete Name: Perry Elizabeth Martin
Freeride Program & Head Coach: Alta Snowbird Freeride Team - Rob Greener
Stephen Helfenbein, AltaBird Coach - "Perry is awesome! She has a passion for skiing and competition that positively impacts all of the AltaBird Freeride Team. One thing that sets her apart is her competitive drive. She is not the type of person to get complacent or be satisfied with past success. Perry wants to win! She is always striving to improver her game. She's not afraid to put in the work it takes to be successful. She couldn't be more coachable - just yesterday she completely changed her skiing. Even though Perry has had great accomplishments in skiing and will continue to, she is the kind of young woman who will be really good at everything she does."
